Case Study 2: e-Leaders

ACFE E-Mentor Project
What was the aim of the session?
The aim of the weekly sessions was to train and mentor the e-leaders on a regular basis making LYNC the primary communication and training tool.
Lync is being used so that the e-leaders could get comfortable with the program and possibly embed it in their organisation.
The project moved to Lync as soon as everyone was aware how to best make use of it.
E-leaders were encouraged to load the Lync program on their computers, iPads, Android and iPhones. Due to the ease of joining the meet up using an emailed link the E -Leaders will continue to use Lync over the next 6 months.


What worked?
The ease of joining and accessing the meet up link made it easy for participants to start exploring Lync. This gave them a chance to play with the tools share the whiteboard and practice.
The participants were pleased to have Lync set up on their devices.
Regular meetings using the LYNC meet up during the e-mentor period has now carried on into the next term.
Extra one-on-one training has been a significant achievement with some e-leaders contacting the mentor on a regular basis for one on one session to solve any online problems associated with the e-mentor project.
Troubleshooting, training, messaging, sharing desktops and simple tutorials have been part of what worked.
LYNC became a useful collaboration tool with instant access to our peers. It allowed for spontaneous efficient communication and messaging that saved time, email space and was extremely efficient and effective.
One on one activity with the e-mentors and information sharing has been the highlight for Gippsland Project.
The LYNC program is a communication and learning tool that is easy to access, is user friendly, instant and saves on emails and phone calls.


What challenges did you have?
The challenges were all technical difficulties that were solved as quickly as possible.
The biggest problem we had was we constantly had 3 people who could not get audio or able to talk so we had one e-leader travel to the centres to troubleshoot and to find out why the same people continuously had a problem.
We checked logins, microphones and asked the project team to troubleshoot for us as well.
We encouraged our e-leaders to go to the wiki and Ning to gain a better understanding of LYNC. We felt that the problem was due to the e-Leaders having 2003 and XP on their computers and LYNC just doesn't integrate well with these older programs.
Another problem we had was we could not send files or save our whiteboards using the LYNC tools provided so we abandoned file sharing during the LYNC sessions and shared any files in our Moodle instead.
